HERBS AND NUTRIENTS FOR A HAPPY PROSTATE: PUMPKIN SEED
Pumpkin Seed (Cucurbita pepo): Sometimes a SP product will contain pumpkin seed extract. The seeds or extracts are currently used in Germany for the therapy of BPH.
Back in 1994, researchers in China gave three oil extracts from pumpkin seeds to rabbits. They observed that one of these extracts was able to reduce bladder pressure, increase bladder compliance, and reduce the pressure on the urethra. Formal, long-term human studies evaluating the role of pumpkin seed ingestion or extracts in relation to size of prostate gland have not been published.
Studies have been done using extracts of pumpkin seeds in combination with SP. The product name is Curbicin, and it is available in Europe. Curbicin contains 160 mg of extract PS6 from pumpkin seeds and also 80 mg of SP.
Drs. Carbin and Larsson, from the Department of Urology ant Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial giving Curbicin to 53 patients for a period of 3 months. Urinary flow increased and, frequency and amount of urine left in the bladder improved from this therapy. We do know that SP helps patients with BPH. Whether pumpkin seed extracts had a role to play in the improvement of these patients is not known.
No recommendations can be made at this time whether the addition of pumpkin seeds or extracts of these seeds will benefit men with BPH. They certainly can't hurt. One study has shown that pumpkin seed oil is rich in antioxidants. If a health care practitioner thinks a patient may benefit from compounds found in pumpkin seeds, all the patient has to do is ingest an ounce or so of these seeds a day (raw would be preferable) or take pumpkin seed extract in capsules. Some products marketed for prostate health contain pumpkin seed extract along with SP. I see no problem with this combination.
The oil content of pumpkin seeds is about 50 percent, and there are four predominant fatty acids within it: palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic. These four make up 98 percent of the total oil content of the seed.
