THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION: THE PROBLEMS OF THE PAST
There are different reasons for suggesting that the sexual revolution has not completely resolved the problems of the past. A number of writers have suggested that one effect of our changing sexual morality has been to substitute the present "tyranny of sex" for the earlier fear and hatred of sex (Gagnon, 1977). The pressures to perform, to be sexually sophisticated, to evaluate all human relationships on sexual terms are no less distortions than is the complete denial of sex.
Similarly, despite the heightened public awareness of sexuality, and the apparent general increase in sexual activity, there is still considerable confusion and ignorance. Numerous surveys, even among college students, reveal the perpetuation of sexual myths (one such myth being that masturbation causes insanity) and the existence of a serious lack of knowledge regarding such topics as venereal disease and birth control. It may also be the case that the public recognition of sexuality has not been accompanied by changes at the private/personal level. Most surveys continue to suggest that few parents discuss sex with their children and that most adult partners continue to feel inhibited in discussing sex.
